The British frigate HMS Surprise and French warship The Acheron stalk each other off the coast of South America during the Napoleonic War. Russell Crowe plays Captain Aubry, a salty old sea dog whose gruff decency is perfectly offset by Paul Bettany's gently intelligent ship's doctor. Director Peter Weir neatly splices two of Patrick O'Brian's hugely popular nautical novels into one epic action adventure on the high seas.
